Backup senior cornerback Da’Quan Davis is no longer with the Nittany Lions. Head coach James Franklin confirmed the departure today in New York City, during the second week of the Penn State Coaches Caravan tour.
Davis saw considerable action as a true freshman in 2012 but his playing time decreased the past two seasons. Last year, he made three tackles in five games.
“Da’Quan is no longer with the team,” Franklin told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. “I keep my comments pretty limited on those things, but we wish him the best … That’s also why we don’t necessarily release things if we don’t have to because I want him to be able to focus on graduating and finishing up his academics.”
Davis was cited by university police on May 9 for possessing a small amount of marijuana, possessing drug paraphernalia and purchasing alcohol underage, according to court documents. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 24.
Even before Davis’ departure, the top three cornerbacks in 2015 appeared to be senior Trevor Williams (Davis’ former high school teammate at Calvert Hall in Towson, Md.) and sophomores Grant Haley and Christian Campbell. Also in the mix are redshirt freshman Daquan Worley and highly-touted incoming freshmen Garrett Taylor and John Reid.
